Murhisalo Nature Reserve

Open map

Murhisalo is located in the south-eastern part of Suomussalmi municipality. The distance from the Kuhmo - Suomussalmi road (912) to the southern edge of the area is about 17 km, and 19 km to the village of Kuivajärvi. Murhisalo consists of the Lososuo - Saarijärvi mire protection area and the surrounding areas of the old forest protection programme. The area is part of the Kalevala Park. From the south, the area borders the Hietajärvi-Kuivajärvi landscape area.

The area is an ancient pleasure area of the Viennese villages of Hietajärvi and Kuivajärvi. In the centre of Murhisalo is a magnificent and extensive marshland reserve. The ancient fishing huts of the villagers are located on the island of Lake Murhijärvi. To the north of the area is an easily accessible ribbon of rapids: the Kivijärvenkosket, Tammikoski, Louhenkoski and Siikaniva, which also provide campfire and lava sites. The area offers unrivalled opportunities for lure fishing. It is therefore worthwhile to set aside several days to explore the various stages. The area is accessible by forest roads, the best of which is the Malahviantie-Marjokyläntie-Holstinniementie route.

Murhisalo is a reindeer husbandry area, but there are also wild deer in the area. Saarijärvi is an important bird lake and Murhisalo has a rich bird fauna, with a focus on large waterfowl and marsh birds such as the Eurasian cuckoo, whooper swan, wood goose and crane. There is also an abundance of old forest bird species.

On Lake Kuivajärvi, Domna pirtti offers accommodation and is a well-equipped rental cottage.
